Privacy policy & terms of use
Effective July 12, 2026. No legalese: here is exactly what BorealMaps collects, what stays on your device, and your rights.
What stays on your device
BorealMaps is built to work offline. This data never leaves your phone and we have no access to it:
- your recorded GPS tracks and waypoints (the library);
- your downloaded offline map regions;
- your preferences (language, theme, visible layers).
Location is used only for features you trigger (showing your position, recording a track). Background recording stays on the device — it is never sent to our servers.
What we collect, and why
- Account: your email and password (hashed — we cannot read it). With Google sign-in: your email, provided by Google.
- Shared markers: the name and coordinates of markers you choose to make public. Other BorealMaps users see them, without your identity.
- Reported species: the fish species you add on a water body, tied to your account.
- Imported maps: the GeoPDF/GeoTIFF files you import are converted and stored on our servers, tied to your account, visible only to you.
- Contact form: your email and message, so we can reply.
- Technical data: IP addresses in server logs and for abuse limiting (rate limits). Kept briefly.
What we don't do
- No ads, no trackers, no third-party analytics.
- No selling or sharing of your personal information.
- No background location collection to our servers.
Retention and deletion
Account data is kept as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Account → Delete my account): this permanently removes your account, shared markers, reported species and imported maps. You can also request deletion by email at bonjour@borealmaps.com.
Your rights
Under Quebec's Law 25 (protection of personal information), you may request access to your information, its correction, or its deletion. Person in charge of the protection of personal information: the BorealMaps team, bonjour@borealmaps.com.
Hosting
Data is stored on our servers with our cloud provider. It is not transferred to third parties.
Terms of use
- Information only. Territory boundaries (crown land, ZECs, outfitters, hunting zones, etc.) are provided for information from public data. They do not replace official regulations: always verify hunting, fishing and access rules with Quebec authorities before heading out.
- The map may contain errors. Despite our efforts, the data shown (boundaries, roads, points of interest, species, user-shared information) may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. It is your responsibility to verify the information against official sources before relying on it — in particular to determine where you may legally travel, hunt or fish.
- Backcountry caution. BorealMaps is a navigation aid, not a safety device. In remote areas, bring paper maps, share your itinerary and carry proper equipment.
- User content. Public markers must remain lawful and relevant; we may remove abusive content.
- No warranty. The app is provided "as is", with no guarantee of accuracy or availability.
